Learning to appreciate my body as it is.

I used to think that my periods are a necessary evil that always shows up at the worst time possible. During the years of having my monthly cycle i have learned to appreciate it and in a way i am now looking forward to it.

Periods were never a taboo in my childhood home, we could always talk about them, either with mom or dad.I even remember one time when my dad went to pick up some pads for us. He has gotten used to the period talk after living in the same household with three menstruating people.

Do you remember the time of getting your first period?

I was in the sixth grade, went to the bathroom like we always do. Seeing blood the first time freaked me out, i did not know what was happening so i ran back to the glass. After telling my teacher that my tummy hurts he send me to the nurses office, I cried while explaining my situation to the nurse. She calmly explained that i just started my period, offered me a pad and showed me how to use it. I might have gotten a pain medicine as well. I remember calling my mom, after arriving home i noticed that she had bought me my first pads.

The time of your periods is quite literally a cleansing time. Our bodies are letting go of something old and making space for something new. people say that our menstrual cycle is an extra vital sign it tells us that our bodies function as they should. Not gonna lie the pain part is quite annoying but luckily for me, pain medicine has been effective. The pain usually only last for the first few days. A new and very useful find has been pain relief patches. Those warm up after getting in contact with oxygen and are invisible underneath your clothes so no one will know that you are wearing them. It works exactly like a wheat pillow relaxing muscles and relieving cramps.

I use non toxic cotton pads that are made by the Finnish family owned company called Vuokkoset. The pads have a Nordic swan Eco label and have been approved by the Finnish skin, allergy and asthma federation.Knowing all this makes me feel good about using this brand, as i know it is safe to use on those sensitive areas.

I have personally never understood scented period products. Why someone would want that other people quite literally smell that they are on their periods? Always used to sell their scented pads in Finland but what ended up happening was that people complained online about accidentally buying the wrong product because the packaging was too similar with the unscented ones. I have not seen those on the shelf's for years, their regular products are still selling well.

I felt like writing about something that is a normal part of life for everyone who menstruates, its time to appreciate all the wonderful things our bodies do for us. ❤
