Why i chose to volunteer.
and why people are not seeing the value you can get from volunteering?
This is something i have been thinking about lately.Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community when your ability to work is at 40% instead of 100%. You get the sense of belonging somewhere and get to use the skills you have acquired. I joined a work program tru our social services that gives me the opportunity to move at my own pace and start slow to see how i am doing. We can always add more work days or do less if it starts to feel too much. Starting point for me is two days per week 4 hours a day to give some structure to my weeks. your work is valuable even when you are not getting a salary. it gives you a sense of belonging and purpose.
I am volunteering at two different places, a kitchen and a “community living room” that is open to people in all ages. There is different group activities you can join and a space to meet each other and just chat about things. The kitchen work is focused on cleaning, washing dishes and organizing. I am able to do different tasks to see what fits me. we also have coaches there to support and guide us if needed. This pandemic has slowed down this process a lot but i am glad to be able to start now.
I decided to choose this route as it felt easier and others will be able to help if there is any obstacles in the way. Plus when you have some disabilities finding employment other ways is so difficult. This is a great way for me to join our community and give back to others. ❤
